TO BE DELETED AND REPLACED WITH PROPOSED <br /> i <br /> SECTION 2.6 TRANSPORTATION <br /> _ 33 <br /> While <br /> roads in these areas are adequate for existing land use, some <br /> additional major or local road construction may be needed in those <br /> areas, depending upon the intensity of development. The following <br /> general guidelines should be used in the County's review of future <br /> development plans as related to the need for additional roadway <br /> infrastructure. <br /> Implementation Guidelines <br /> Spacing: Lased on existing development and land use, current spacing <br /> is adequate. If more than an additional 100 dwelling units are <br /> anticipated within one of the superblocks described above, or in any <br /> area with greater than two miles between arterial, collector, or <br /> major local roads, consideration should be given to the construction <br /> of new public roads or the extension of existing major local roads to <br /> further divide the block. <br /> Location: The initial planning for one - of the above facilities would <br /> be to physically bisect a superblock in order to derive the greatest <br /> benefit. However, there are geographical considerations that may <br /> alter such placement. Major creek crossings and severely steep <br /> topography should be avoided. Generally the maximum grade for such a <br /> facility would be approximately 7-9%. <br /> Need: Because different levels and types of development intensity <br /> will generate varying amounts of traffic, the need for additional <br /> facilities should be determined based on the County Land Use Plan and <br /> on specific development plans. The Planning Staff should review <br /> transportation needs as development occurs, as provided for in <br /> Article 13 of the zoning ordinance. Any needed additional collector <br /> or major local road facilities should be provided as public roads in <br /> order to ensure maintenance and access by the general public. <br /> OTHER SIGNIFICANT TRANSPORTATION ELEMENTS <br /> Orange County's transportation system is dominated by the road <br /> network, but is not entirely defined by it. Rail facilities and air <br /> services additionally comprise the transportation system and <br /> contribute to the movement of people and goods through Orange County. <br /> ail Facilities. Orange County -is served by the Southern Railroad <br /> which traverses the central portion of the County in an east/west <br /> direction through Eno Hillsborough and Cheeks Townships parallel to <br /> the I-85/US 70 corridor. The Southern Railroad also serves the <br /> southern portion of the._.Carrboro/Chapel Hill area, although.this <br /> segment of the line is now rarely used. <br /> ........... 2.6-1.7 __ <br />
