Sheltering in Place <br />27 <br />If it is dangerous to leave the building, it may be safer to make a shelter out of the place you are <br />in. Sheltering in place is a way for you to stay as safe as possible until help arrives. <br />Preparing to shelter in place includes having basic items that can include: <br />First aid kit <br />• Food and water <br />• Clothing and shoes <br />• Flashlight and batteries <br />Battery- powered radio <br />• Whistle <br />Blanket or sweater <br />Precautions to take: <br />• Turn the ventilation for the building off <br />• Check co- workers for injuries <br />Do not try to leave <br />• Stay informed by the news media <br />• If you are instructed to protect your breathing: <br />• After turning off the ventilation systems, put plastic or aluminum foil on doors <br />and windows to seal them <br />• Cover your nose and mouth with a damp handkerchief or other cloth <br />If instructed, take shelter under a desk, table, or in a doorway. If you cannot get under <br />something sturdy or stand in a doorway, move to the lowest floor, get on your hands and <br />knees and cover your head with your hands and arms. <br />23 <br />
