The County of Orange <br /> SENIOR VACCINATION SEASON <br /> 2000 <br /> BY THE COMMISSIONERS OF ORANGE COUNTY <br /> A PROCLAMATION <br /> WHEREAS,thousands of adults in this country are unprotected from diseases such as <br /> influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia; and <br /> WHEREAS, each year, an average of 20,000 Americans die from influenza-more than 90 <br /> percent of these persons are age 65 or older. Many of these deaths can be prevented through <br /> vaccinations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season, a statewide vaccination effort, is being held <br /> throughout the month of October and into November, to help reduce the number of health <br /> complications and deaths associated with these illnesses by promoting adult immunizations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season is a collaborative effort in Orange County, <br /> between UNC Hospitals, Kerr Drug, local churches, local employers, local medical providers and <br /> the Health Department; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season will involve the provision of influenza and <br /> pneumococcal pneumonia vaccines to person age 65 and older with Medicare Part B through <br /> community-based events and encourages all immunization providers to work year-round with <br /> their communities to vaccinate adults by expanding clinic hours, increasing screenings, and <br /> distributing educational and promotional materials; and <br /> WHEREAS, by joining this effort, agencies, businesses and civic and religious <br /> organizations can help protect adults in this County from becoming at risk of death or disability <br /> from a vaccine-preventable disease; <br /> NOW,THEREFORE WE, THE ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, do hereby <br /> proclaim October and November 2000, as"SENIOR VACCINATION SEASON" in Orange <br /> County, and call upon the citizens of our County to join us in supporting these efforts to fully <br /> immunize our senior adult population. <br /> r� Moses Carey, Jr., Chair ' / /% <br /> Orange County Board of Commi sione(s <br /> Jr <br />
