values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose <br /> components may lack Individual distinction; or <br /> d. have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important In prehistory or <br /> history." <br /> in general, the majority of archaeological sites that are deemed significant and typically eligible <br /> for Inclusion on the NRHP will fall under the last criterion(d). in order to assess a site's <br /> significance, its potential for contributing new or collaborative Information to the theoretical <br /> and substantive knowledge of archaeology must be determined (Butler 1987; Townsend et al. <br /> 1993). Consequently, researchers must consider how each site helps address the questions <br /> within the project research design and within the framework of other regional research (Butler <br /> 1987). <br /> The potential of any archaeological site to address research questions is based on determining <br /> the Intactness of cultural deposits (integrity), the variety and quantity of artifacts,the clarity of <br /> site stratigraphy and the discreteness of site boundaries, and on the environmental context of <br /> each site(Glassow 1977). In addition, the relative occurrence of cultural assemblages In the <br /> region was taken into account during site evaluation to help address issues of rarity and <br /> redundancy(Butler 1987; Glassow 1977). <br /> H. REPORTING <br /> Upon completion of the fieldwork, a management summary of the results of the Investigation . <br /> will be prepared. This management summary will describe the preliminary Interpretations and <br /> the course of analysis, certifying that the research design set forth has been Implemented and <br /> that the fieldwork specified has been completed. The management summary will Include a <br /> description of the survey, a summary of results, and recommendations. <br /> Following completion of analyses, a draft report will be prepared detailing the results of the <br /> field investigation, The report will detail the results of the background research, fieldwork, and <br /> laboratory analysis. The report will be illustrated with photographs and drawings of sites and <br /> artifacts, as needed, and will conform to the reporting standards presented In the North <br /> Carolina State Historic Preservation Office guidelines. The report will Include the following key <br /> elements: results of background research, archaeological site significance assessment and <br /> NRHP recommendations, resource locational Information; and additional work <br /> recommendations, If any. <br /> Following the receipt of comments on the draft report from Orange County, the report will be <br /> revised and resubmitted as the final report. <br /> 1. DELIVERABLES <br /> Dellverables under this contract will include the following. <br /> • Management Summary. <br /> Two copies of the draft report for Orange County review with completed North <br /> Carolina Archaeological Site Forms. Architectural Resources will be added into the <br /> NC HPO Survey Database. <br /> • Four copies of the final report on medium-weight bond paper, bound or stapled, <br /> after all review comments have been addressed. <br /> • GIS site location shapefiles. <br /> s <br />
