mesh, employing other standard excavation procedures; and keeping a photographic record of <br /> all meld investigations. <br /> Archit aural Worm <br /> For historic architectural resources, Legacy will photograph building exteriors and prepare a <br /> site plan. The purpose of the architectural geld evaluation will be to Identify architectural <br /> resources more than 50 years old and make recommendations regarding the NRHP eligibility. <br /> Fieldwork for recording architectural resources will follow the North Carolina Architectural <br /> Survey Manual (2008). Standard forms will be used In the field to record architectural <br /> resources. All architectural resources identified during the survey will be delineated In the field <br /> by GIS-GPS technology and transferred onto scale/location mapping (engineering design plans) <br /> as shapefiles. <br /> Cemeteries <br /> If any cemeteries are found within the project APE, they will be recorded, but they will not be <br /> probed to determine boundaries or the number of graves present. if unmarked human burials <br /> or skeletal remains are found, the North Carolina State Archaeologist will be notified <br /> Immediately, following the provisions of North Carolina GS, 70, Article 3,The Unmarked <br /> Human Burial and Skeletal Remains Protection Act. <br /> E. LABORATORY ANALYSIS <br /> Once the Fieldwork is completed,the archaeological materials will be returned to Legacy's <br /> Durham facility for processing. The artifacts will be cleaned and catalogued, and the artifact <br /> collection from each site will be studied to determine the date or dates of occupations present <br /> and the range of activities carried out at each site. The vertical and horizontal distributions of <br /> the materials from each site will be studied so that the nature and extent of the site can be <br /> better understood. <br /> F. RESEARCH QUESTIONS <br /> The research design for this project Is determined by its objectives, specifically to discover and <br /> locate any cultural resources that would be affected by the proposed project, to assess the <br /> significance of these resources, and to make recommendations for the management of the <br /> Identified resources <br /> G. NRHP-ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT <br /> Recommendations on the significance of all cultural resources recorded during this survey will <br /> be based on several criteria. The criteria for evaluating the NRHP eligibility are described In 36 <br /> CFR 60.4. Sites, objects, districts, structures, and buildings are determined as worthy of <br /> inclusion on the NRHP If"the quality of significance In American history, architecture, <br /> engineering and culture is present" in these resources and if they"possess Integrity of location, <br /> design, setting, materials,workmanship, feeling, and association and <br /> a. are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad <br /> patterns of our history; or <br /> b. are associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or <br /> C. embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of <br /> construction that represents the work of a master, or that possess high artistic <br /> 4 <br />
