2 <br /> 1 <br /> 2 RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION <br /> 3 FOR <br /> 4 COMMISSIONER VALERIE P. FOUSHEE <br /> 5 <br /> 6 <br /> 7 WHEREAS, the residents of Orange County elected Valerie P. Foushee to the Board of <br /> 8 County Commissioners in 2004 and re-elected her again in 2008; and <br /> 9 <br /> 10 WHEREAS, her Board colleagues expressed recognition of, and appreciation for, <br /> 11 Commissioner Foushee's service and leadership by electing her as Vice Chair of <br /> 12 the Board of Commissioners for 2008 and Chair of the Board of Commissioners <br /> 13 for 2009 and 2010; and <br /> 14 <br /> 15 WHEREAS, Valerie P. Foushee has served the residents of Orange County for many years, <br /> 16 not only as a County Commissioner but also as an active member of her <br /> 17 community; and <br /> 18 <br /> 19 WHEREAS, in 2004, Commissioner Foushee became the first female African American to <br /> 20 serve on the Orange County Board of Commissioners; and <br /> 21 <br /> 22 WHEREAS, during her tenure as an Orange County Commissioner, Valerie P. Foushee has <br /> 23 shared her talent for leadership and public service through her work on <br /> 24 numerous committees, organizations, boards, and institutes of higher learning <br /> 25 including the Durham Technical Community College Board of Trustees; <br /> 26 President, NC Association of Black County Officials; UNC Board of Visitors; NC <br /> 27 Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) Board of Directors; Chair of the <br /> 28 NCACC Healthy Living Task Force; NAACP (Chapel Hill-Carrboro Branch;) <br /> 29 Orange County Social Services Board of Directors; Chapel Hill/Orange County <br /> 30 Visitors Bureau Board of Directors; and the Boys and Girls Club of Eastern <br /> 31 Piedmont Board of Directors, and <br /> 32 <br /> 33 WHEREAS, Commissioner Foushee has fought for the rights of residents of Orange County, <br /> 34 her genuine concern for others manifests through her tireless advocacy to <br /> 35 improve the quality of life for the people of Orange County; and <br /> 36 <br /> 37 WHEREAS, there comes a time when a person decides to pass the torch and adjust priorities <br /> 38 accordingly; <br /> 39 <br /> 40 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 41 officially commends Valerie P. Foushee for her years of distinguished service, <br /> 42 salutes her voluntary decision to pursue higher public office, looks forward to her <br /> 43 continued contributions to the community, and wishes her and her family the very <br /> 44 best in their future endeavors. <br /> 45 <br /> 46 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be presented to Ms. Valerie Foushee, with a <br /> 47 copy sent to the media, and that the Resolution be spread upon the minutes of <br /> 48 this meeting. <br /> 49 <br /> 50 This the twentieth day of November 2012. <br />
