23 <br />Goal Five: Create, preserve, and protect a natural environment that <br />includes clean water, clean air, wildlife, important natural lands and <br />sustainable energy for present and future generations. <br />2013 UPDATE from Board of Elections <br />• Recycle election material whenever possible <br />• Re -use training manuals and voting instructions <br />2013 UPDATE from Human Resources <br />Facilitate a recruitment and selection process that yields qualified <br />employees to carry out the duties and services in support of the <br />above referenced goal. <br />Priority 1: Conserve high priority natural areas, wildlife habitat, and prime <br />forests. <br />2013 UPDATE from DEAPR <br />The County, through its Lands Legacy program, has <br />acquired over 1,000 acres for parks and nature preserves, <br />and protected an additional 2,000 acres of prime farmland <br />and significant natural areas with permanent conservation <br />easements. Other federal and state cost -share programs <br />have been leveraged to this end. As of 2008 sixty -one <br />percent of the county's 10,000 acres of significant natural <br />heritage areas (i.e., natural areas / prime forests) had been <br />protected by various entities. Other areas have been <br />protected since then and will be tallied as part of the next <br />State of the Environment report to be completed in 2013 -14. <br />The Soil and Water Conservation District offers many federal <br />and State programs to assist in wildlife habitat protection and <br />creation, and in creating forested areas, especially along <br />stream corridors. <br />The Commission for the Environment is collaborating with <br />others to identify and protect significant roadside habitat for <br />native plants (as authorized by BOCC) <br />Priority 12: Implement County's Environmental Responsibility goals <br />2013 UPDATE from DEAPR <br />The Commission for the Environment has presented findings <br />and recommendations to BOCC on selected environmental <br />issues (e.g., effects of forest management on water quality; <br />effects of herbicides on roadside native plant habitat; <br />potential effects of hydraulic fracturing ( "fracking ") in Orange <br />
