With intriguing costumes and
exceptional dances, Ballet Folkloric Mexico is recognized throughout the U.S. and Mexico as
one of the most exciting groups presenting authentic regional dances of Mexico. Ballet
Folklorico transcends barriers of language and cultural influences, bringing new, enriching
perspectives.
The company introduces audiences to fascinating folklore and magnificent ceremonial rituals
from regions of Veracruz and Tamaulipas, including traditions of the Aztecas, Michoacan and
many others. The performance showcases lavish, flamboyant costumes, some with colorful
flowing dresses and others that feature headdresses of pheasant tails that reach more than six
feet in length. Whether watching a never-seen-before ritual dance or the famous "Mexican Hat
Dance," audiences will get a real dance treat with Ballet Folklorico.
Category NC Essential Standards/Common Core Standards Addressed
3.H.1 Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced history of
Social local and regional communities
Studies 3.H.2 Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people and
laces
K-5.R.1 Use a variety of thinking skills to analyze and evaluate dance
Dance K-5.C.1 Understand cultural, historical and interdisciplinary connections with
dance
K-5.MR.1 Understand the interacting elements to respond to music and music
Music Performances
K-5 CRA Understand global, interdisciplinary, and 21St century connections with
music
3-5.A.1 Analyze literary texts and performances
Theatre Arts 3-5.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of the social, historical, and cultural contexts in
which it was created
Integrating Cultural Arts into the Curriculum
The PTA Cultural Arts program works in concert with the school's art education curriculum, as
well as with the teachers who incorporate the performances into the grade-level curriculum
specified in the NC Standard Course of Study Arts Education component. Both Mike Wiley and
Ballet Folklorico Mexico provide instructional materials to correspond with their performances.
Each teacher is responsible for integrating these materials and the performances with the
curriculum in each classroom. These linkages would most often take place on a grade-wide
scale, with teachers of the same grade using the same lesson, which would be reinforced during
relevant `specials' classes (e.g., art, music, library).
