Arts in Education Grant— Fall 2012-13 McDougle Elementary School PTA
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds.
We are seeking matching funds to pay artists' fees for the following two performances, which
will be held on school premises in January and April 2013.
Tired Souls: King and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, presented by Mike Wiley
Audience: 3, 4, 5 (--260 students representing MES diversity)
Show length: 50 minutes
Show date: January 2013
Study Areas: Social Studies, Theatre Arts, English Language Arts
Mike Wiley is an incredible performer, who is based locally but travels widely for his
performances. His one-man shows are riveting explorations into history that captivate
audiences. His frequent use of audience participation throughout his shows ensures that the
students are engaged and provide them opportunities to be a part of the experience.
Tired Souls opens in Montgomery, Alabama on December 1, 1955 -the day Rosa Parks
refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man. Her determination was the catalyst that
inspired Montgomery's black citizens to abandon all travel on city buses until they were no
longer forced to sit in the back or stand when a white person boarded. But there were others
who came before Mrs. Parks and laid the groundwork for this pivotal moment. Tired Souls
introduces audiences to Jo Ann Robinson, Claudette Colvin and others so instrumental in
lighting a fire under the Civil Rights movement and changing the course of U.S. history forever.
Category NC Essential Standards/Common Core Standards Addressed
3.H.1 Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced history of
local and regional communities.
Social 3.H.2 Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people and
Studies places
5.H.1 Analyze the chronology of key events in the United States
5.H.2 Understand the role of prominent figures in shaping the United States
3-5.A.1 Analyze literary texts and performances
Theatre Arts 3-5.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of the social, historical, and cultural contexts in
which it was created
SL.3.2 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or
English information presented orally or through other media
Language SL4.2 Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse
Arts media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally
SL.5.2 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse
media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and oral)
