Partnering with the Frank Gallery, I would create and install a temporary illuminated public
artwork at 109 E. Franklin Street(see artwork sample Pulsar, an artwork I installed on the Jordan
Marsh facade in Downtown Boston). Having received the approval of the building owner and the
Frank Gallery Board Chair, my project would include the creation and installation of
Chrysalis+Drago(n) Doctrine on the full width of the second story facade above the Frank Gallery
and the Clothing Warehouse on East Franklin Street for the month of February, 2013.
In keeping with my efforts to address ecological issues, the artwork would consist of ten ring forms
made of bamboo harvested from my grove in Warrenton, NC (see artwork sample H2O Flow, an
artwork I installed at Chapel Hill Town Hall entry court) that are attached to the existing metal grates
located at the base of each upper floor window. Each ring is created using 19 pieces of 1 inch
diameter bamboo culms held together with hardware aesthetically masked using sisal twine (see
attached ring sketch). Mounted perpendicular to the facade and ranging from 5ft to 2 ft high and
extending up to 33/4 ft out from the wall, the ten rings support a 40 long fabric dragon form (see
attached building facade sketch). Created using Carolina blue and white stretch-knit fabric (see
attached chrysalis sketch), the dragon chrysalis is suspended between the ten rings and illuminated
from within using LCD lamps to reduce energy output and costs to a minimum.
The ten bamboo rings, the fabric dragon chrysalis, and the lighting system would be created off site at
Legacyworks studio in Warrenton, NC during the months of December and January. Working with
Chapel Hill Town officials and the associated code enforcement entities, I would employ staging to
install the sculpture over three days either the last week in January or first week in February as
scheduled to best meet the needs of the Town and the businesses involved.
2. Besides coinciding with and reflecting the illumination aspects of the annual Chinese new year's
Lantern Festival, Chrysalis+Drago(n) Doctrine also represents new birth, a physical manifestation of
the love associated with the celebration of Valentine's Day. Conceptually, the public art installation
would provide a visual incentive and a physical location for people to share thoughts and ideas about
the state of current commercial banking credit and lending practices.
