Pulsar <br /> Site-specific public art environmental installation—Jordan Marsh Downtown Boston <br /> • Completion Date: March 1984 <br /> • Media: PVC pipe,rope,knit fabric,with 100 internal lights connected to a playable keyboard switching system <br /> • Location:Jordan Marsh Company, Boston, MA <br /> • Dimensions: 20 ft(H)x 20 ft(W)x 350 ft(L) <br /> Commissioned by Jordan Marsh Company to rest atop the downtown headquarters' building marquee, this brightly <br /> illuminated sculpture acted as a beacon inviting shoppers to view the store's new Spring Fashion Collection. <br /> Constructed of knit fabric supported by rings of tubing, this piece consists of five units ranging from 50 ft to 75 Ft in <br /> length, and from 12 ft to 20 ft in diarneter. The internal lighting system, consisting of a hundred individual lamps,each <br /> was connected to a single key of a massive keyboard and "played"to sounds of music, pulsating up and down the entire <br /> length of the store's marquee. A take-off of this idea could be used to create an exciting interactive work in one of the <br /> businesses downtown Chapel Hill. <br /> 2. Aeolus <br /> Site-specific environmental public art installation—Mills Gallery, Boston Center for the Arts <br /> • Completion Date: Summer 1986 <br /> • Media: PVC pipe,cable,knit fabric,wood, fan, and internal lighting system <br /> • Location: Mills Gallery, Boston Center for the Arts Plaza, Boston, MA <br /> • Dimensions: 12 ft(H)x 9 ft(W)x 25 ft(L) <br /> This specific artwork was installed in completion of a promise made during an art installation on the Island of Syros.. <br /> Greece in which the winds were abated. In conjunction with the gallery exhibition of Layne's drawings and paintings <br /> and a simultaneous indoor installation and performance piece titled Homage to Poseidon, this archway installation met <br /> the stringent demands required of affixing an artwork to an historic building. Making the installation their-own, local <br /> high school students used this arching environment as a meeting place and individually protected the artwork from <br /> street vandalism. <br /> 3. Dotted Line <br /> Site-specific environmental public art installation—An Artsplosure event <br /> • Completion Date: Spring 1990 <br /> • Media: PVC pipe,rope, knit fabric,metal stakes, concrete footings, and internal lighting system <br /> • Location: Moore Square, Raleigh,NC• Artsplosure Spring Art and Jazz Festival <br /> • Dimensions: Fountain section: 25 ft(H)x 37 ft(W)x 31.5 ft(L), Tree section: 20 ft(14)x 27 ft(W) x 36 ft(L) <br /> Each suspended from a single nylon rope attached at one end to a railing of an second story walkway structure or a tree <br /> limb across the street and the other end attached to the ground, sixteen individual internally illuminated fabric discs <br /> danced in the wind to the surrounding music and the nearby splashing of the fountain.
