Like many art gallery <br /> opening events, it will have music, refreshments, and people strolling about to see the work of creative <br /> people.What makes this event special is that the artists in this show have developmental disabilities that <br /> often cause people to focus on their disabilities, rather than their abilities. <br /> EXTRAORDINARY VENTURES is a private non-profit organization based in Chapel Hill. NC that operates a <br /> variety of small businesses to employ adults with developmental disabilities. It was founded in 2007 when a <br /> group of local parents, inspired by the abilities of their young adult children living with autism, realized that <br /> once their sons and daughters completed high school,there were few opportunities for employment or even <br /> social interaction or support for them in the community. Today, Extraordinary Ventures employs over 40 <br /> adults and provides social interaction to many more through a regular activities program called "Friday Night <br /> Live." <br /> As an extension of their desire to create learning environments,social engagement,and the celebration of <br /> ability over disability, EV has piloted a new program called "EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS"with the help of art <br /> teacher, Uli Schempp,of the ART THERAPY INSTITUTE of Carrboro.The intention of this program is to <br /> encourage artistic expression and communication over the course of a 2 month period and then to present <br /> this work to the community,families, and friends in an opening night gala. More than 20 students have partici- <br /> pated in the art class and many of artists will be present at the event to talk will people about it and enjoy the <br /> encouragement of seeing their work displayed. Some work will be offered for sale and some will be for display <br /> only. <br /> This event is free and open to the public from 7 to 9pm. EV hopes that many people will stop by to <br /> congratulate these artists and enjoy the evening's festivities. The Extraordinary Ventures Event Center is <br /> located at 200 Elliott Road in Chapel Hill across from the Whole Foods Shopping Center.There is plenty of <br /> parking and the building is easily accessible on the ground level. <br /> PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST <br />
