Summary Statement <br /> Phillips Mlddle School PTSA will use the grant to fund a portion of the artist's fees for <br /> three artistic performances during the 2012-2013 school year. <br /> Thursday, Jan 10: Mike Wiley, Tired Souls (8th graders): $800 <br /> Monday, Feb 25: Bright Star Theatre, Heroes of the Underground Railroad (6th <br /> graders): $575 <br /> Wed, March 13: Jabali African Acrobats (6th, 7th, 8th graders): $850 <br /> Narrative <br /> School Profile <br /> The doors opened at Phillips in 1963, so Phillips is the oldest middle school in Chapel <br /> HIII and looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary! Phillips is a neighborhood <br /> school, with many students from the surrounding homes walking or riding bikes to <br /> school. The enrollment at Phillips is 644 children, serving 6th to 8th grade students. <br /> The school offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade having two <br /> electives per semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign languages including <br /> Spanish, French and Latin, Exploring Life Skills, Exploring Technology, Video <br /> Production, Sculpture, Visual Arts, Band and Orchestra. The school also offers <br /> programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted Education and English as a Second <br /> Language. <br /> Phillips has a very diverse racial composition: White (48%), Black (16%). <br /> Asian (20%), <br /> Hispanic (12%) and Multi-Racial (1%) <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. During the 2011-2012 <br /> school year, the students enjoyed the following performances: <br /> Transactors Improv, 7th graders. These performers are an active improvisational <br /> performance group based out of Chapel Hill. <br /> Liang Acrobatic and Comedy Show, 6th graders. This performance delighted the 6th <br /> grade class of 205 students in the Spring of 2012. This performance act combined the <br /> talents of Liang in acrobatics, dance and music and Bill Patti's comedic elements. <br />
