ORANGE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA <br />NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS <br />FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2012 <br />Committed fund balance at June 30, 2012 is as follows: <br />Assigned Fund Balance <br />Assigned fund balance is the portion of fund balance that Orange County intends to use for <br />specific purposes. The County's governing body has the authority to assign fund balance. The <br />Manager, as granted in the officially adopted budget ordinance, has been granted limited <br />authority to assign fund balance. <br />Subsequent Year's Expenditures portion of fund balance that is appropriated in the next year's <br />budget that is not already classified in restricted or committed. The governing body approves the <br />appropriation; however, the budget ordinance authorizes the Manager and Finance Officer to <br />make certain modifications without requiring Board approval. <br />Assigned for Community and Environment portion of fund balance budgeted by the Board for <br />planning, economic development, and other related activities. <br />Assigned for General Services portion of fund balance that has been budgeted by the Board for <br />general services related activities. <br />Assigned for Education portion of fund balance budgeted by the Board to be used to support <br />public education. <br />40 <br /> <br />
