Mr. Irwin collaborates in the development of all Arts Academy curriculum and will work closely with the Sacrificial
Poets in meeting the varied instructional needs of the partnering teachers. In workshops with Ormand Moore's three
Englisb N classes, students will contemporize the writings of Walt Whitman and create performances for their
classmates. In Holly Loranger and Lauren Logan's seven US History classes, students will use writing and
performance workshops to explore and bring to life the human emotions behind real events in the Civil Rights
Movement and the Great Depression. In Kim Lindekugel's live English I classes, students will be oriented to
spoken word poetry writing and performance through numerous writing prompts and exercises that will culminate in
a class-wide open mic experience. In Michael Irwin's five English II classes, students will use writing and
performance workshops to identify the significance of their complex identities within a global framework.
To date, Sacrificial Poets has completed approximately 120 class period workshops at CHHS. There has been too
many curricular plans to describe in this space, but the students have always seen these workshops as the highlight
of their Arts Focus classes.
Carrboro High School
The Sacrificial Poets will lead writing and performance workshops at CHS in both a Creative Writing and English
IV class, under the guidance and collaboration with Mackensie Malkemes,English teacher. Together, the classes
contain 61 total students in grades 9-12,29 of which are students of color. Due to her role in advising the CHS
Poetry Club for the last three years,Ms.Malkemes is very experienced in her collaborations with the Sacrificial
Poets.
The Sacrificial Poets will facilitate writing and performance workshops in both classes, linked to the themes of
Identity and Family Roots, The Creative Writing class will be working on a memoir unit, and their work with the
poets will culminate in translating a memory or experience into a spoken word piece. Students will have already
generated written pieces of varied personal experiences, and the Sacrificial Poets will guide the writing, revising,
and performance processes to refine those ideas and bodies of work into stage-ready,emotionally entrenched poetic
pieces.
The English IV class will read Beowulf and explore the roots of our English language and the cultural significance
of Anglo-Saxon storytelling. Students will seek to render their own personal stories to pass along in the form of
Spoken Word, with the guidance and pedagogy of the Sacrificial Poets. The poets'work with this particular course
will especially focus on the Common Core integration in a class with ELL students in terms of rigorous curriculum
in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The Sacrificial Poets create a literacy-rich environment where students
are immersed in a variety of language experiences. As part of a classroom collection to be shared, the finished pieces
will be recorded as podcasts.
Phoenix Academy
The Sacrificial Poets will lead writing and performance workshops at Phoenix Academy in English 14V classes,
under the guidance and collaboration with Rachael Kares,English teacher. Working closely with the Sacrificial
Poets, students at Phoenix Academy will continue their study of poetry as performance art. Ms.Kares teaches all of
PA's 28 diverse learners in an alternative school setting. Ms. Kares has worked with many local artists in order to
create more authentic opportunities for student enrichment, increase community engagement with our most fragile
learners, and to cultivate deeper relationships through a thematic curriculum approach with the students of PA.
While teaching in Asheville,Ms.Kares implemented a number of strategies to foster student communication,
creativity, and community in the classroom. Her primary approach was introducing students to spoken-word poetry
and facilitating an open forum where students could explore their voices and that of their peers. She has worked
extensively with Poetix Program-an ally and longtime supporter of Sacrificial Poets-and Asheville Area Arts
Council. Additionally, the Public Schools Foundation funded the PA Arts Program for its pilot run in 2011-2012.
This grant afforded PA students many opportunities to work with the Sacrificial Poets. These students have a close
relationship with the poets and the community they represent. The program has been a success and would like to
continue. All students enrolled at PA will participate in the Arts Program in the 2012-2013 school year.
It is also worth noting that in addition to meeting individually with the Sacrifical Poets,Michael Irwin,Mackensie
Malkemes, and Rachel Kares will be meeting regularly to discuss ongoing performance collaboration opportunities.
