'
'
Karrboru High School
The Arts program at CHS continues m grow, offering various levels of acting, theatre, ceramics, and the visual arts.
There currently are no arts-based core classes offered;however, the English department has plans to work with the
Sacrificial Poets and other community arts-based organizations to enrich the curriculum, especially with its
integration of the Common Core standards.
Phoenix Academy
As an alternative school,Phoenix Academy offers no Arts classes;however, many teachers have actively
collaborated with local artists to integrate arts lessons into their respective curriculums. The"Phoenix Academy
.Arts Program"was started by current English teacher Rachael Kares. The purpose of this project is to integrate an
arts program at Phoenix Academy, Students currently have some access to arts-based learning through the 2011-
2012 Arts Program(funded by a Student Enrichment Grant). In the 2011-2012 school year, local groups such as the
Sacrificial Poets,HoopDrum, and The Paperhand Puppet Intervention have coordinated workshops with PA. The
pilot run of the Phoenix Academy Arts Program has been a major success and aims to continue its growth this year
and beyond. For the 2012-2013 school year, the Phoenix Academy Arts Program would like to work directly with
the Sacrificial Poets spoken-word poetry organization.
PROPOSED USES OF GRANT FUNDS:
100%of the funding obtained for the Arts in Education Coalition Grant will go toward paying Sacrificial Poets staff
for the development and facilitation of writing and performance poetry curriculum at the three aforementioned high
schools. We feel that the demographics within the classes targeted for this project are proportionately representative
of the respective student bodies at each school, All of the proposed workshops mentioned below will be developed
and led by Kane Smego and/or Will McInerney of Sacrificial Poets. In some cases, facilitator intems may
accompany them as supporting instructors. It is important to remember, that in addition to all contact time with
students during instructional workshops,Sacrificial Poets spends considerable time communicating and
collaborating with teachers in the preparation of all lessons,as well as follow-up and debriefing sessio n.s.
School Total number of Total number of 50 Total number of Proposed dates of
classes to receive minute workshops to students to be workshops
workshops be administered to impacted by
classes workshops
Chapel Hill High 17 50 510 January 2013-April
School 2013
Carrboro High 2 10 61 February 2013-
School March 2013
Phoenix Academy 3 16* 28 January 2013-
*90 minute classes February 2013
TOTAL 22 76 599 January 2013-May
Additionally, Sacrificial Poets will be inviting students from these workshops to be active participants at their
regularly scheduled monthly Teen Slams and Open Mics. Students will also have the opportunity to perform at the
Identity Summit and to participate in their schools' Poetry Clubs, which will be funded by a smaller National Public
Radio grant. Combined, these events bring out some of the most racial, ethnic, and age diverse crowds in Orange
County by the hundreds.
Chapel Hill High School
As the Director of the CHHS Arts Academy,Michael Irwin has been a supporter of the Sacrificial Poets since their
beginning. He has sought to make them a cornerstone of the Arts Academy experience for hundreds of students and
dozens of classes in the last five years. This year, with help from the Education Coalition grant,he aspires to bring
the most innovative and diverse poetry curriculum yet into 17 different English classrooms for grades 9-12. In an
effort to share this work more publicly and to ensure future funding sources, all of this work will be strongly
documented this year in the form of photographs, audio recordings, and video.
