i <br /> 1 <br /> u <br /> 5.Arts Program Application Narrative for FRANK:inFocus,Focus on Outreach Through <br /> Expressive Art Projects and Community Health <br /> Organizational Profile- Mission and History <br /> FRANK gallery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operated by the volunteer effort of <br /> the Member Artists of the Franklin Street Arts Collective,its staff,and the support of community <br /> leaders and art lovers. <br /> The mission of the Franklin Street Arts Collective is to support the arts community of <br /> Chapel Hill and the region,strengthen community appreciation of the arts through educational <br /> outreach,and promote the Town of Chapel Hill and North Carolina as a major Arts Destination. <br /> See supplementary page on Background. <br /> Grant Request for FRANKJnFocus, <br /> Focus on Outreach Through Expressive Art Projects <br /> In conjunction with our Community Outreach mission,we are requesting funding from <br /> the Arts Commission to enhance our growing Educational Arts Outreach programs.FRANK is <br /> committed to providing opportunities for educational arts programming for a diversity of <br /> populations including children and teens,and those with special needs. <br /> For 2013,FRANK will be partnering with several programs through our "Focus on <br /> Outreach Through Expressive Art Projects" community arts efforts.We are now expanding our <br /> outreach efforts of FRANK:inFocus,our successful photography festival,to include visual and <br /> performing arts,focusing on programs for teens and children.We will continue to use <br /> photography as well as creative writing,music,painting,collage,and drawing. <br /> For our second year,we are bringing teens to our gallery through a pre-college class at <br /> the Elon Academy entitled,"Self-Expression through Photography and Creative Writing," <br /> specifically designed for first generation college-bound,predominantly minority students.(See <br /> sample photos with DVD and online at http://www.btyroler.com/FRANKandEA/ ) Students will <br /> receive a private tour of the gallery and have their work critiqued by FRANK artists.Additional <br /> funding was received from Elon University and the Heim Foundation,to support an exhibit of <br /> their work,and FRANK has reserved the Community Wall Gallery for April with an opening <br /> reception and presentation by the teens on April 27,2013. <br /> "Brushes with Life: Art,Artists,&Mental Illness" is a creative arts program for people in <br /> treatment for mental illness at the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health. <br /> Patients display their work in the Brushes with Life Gallery,located on the third floor of the NC <br /> Neurosciences Hospital.FRANK partners with Brushes with Life consultant Art therapist <br /> Bridget Pemberton-Smith,current president of the North Carolina Art Therapy Association,for <br /> seminars and art presentations at FRANK's Community Wall gallery.Bridget is also working to <br /> bring teens from the iCancer project to FRANK for a similar experience.Founded by a <br /> recreational therapist at N.C.Children's Hospital,the expressive photography program helps <br /> teenagers battling cancer document their experiences through photographic portrait-making and <br /> storytelling. <br />
