Teaching Artist Kim Arrington
will visit each of three fourth grade classes for five days (one hour in each classroom per
day), with the first two days in the classroom spent working with students to identify the
major plot points in the book Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. During the three
remaining days she will work with students to convert those plot points into poems and
then song lyrics and introduce the class to jazz, which is the musical focal point of the
residency. After the in-class portion of the residency is complete, Arrington will score the
student-written work outside the classroom and direct three rehearsals with professional
musicians and singers. They will all come back to the school about a month following the
residency (March 2013) to perform the piece for the three fourth grade classes, as well
as parents who will be invited to the performance.
The Page to Stage residency directly correlates with the North Carolina Common Core
and Essential Standards curriculum for fourth grade. Specifically, the residency
highlights the Reading Standards for Literacy, Foundational Skills (fluency), and Writing
Standards (a variety of texts) within Literacy.
Central Elementary has served as The ArtsCenter's focus school for five consecutive
years as part of an ongoing partnership with Orange County Schools. This program was
designed to provide enriching, meaningful arts integration experiences to low income
students over the long term. Teaching artists are brought into regular classroom settings
to teach curriculum through a variety of art forms. As a result, students learn curriculum
through many different learning modes, which caters to the various learning styles
present in a given classroom. In total, TAC has implemented 25 residencies and seven
professional development workshops for classroom teachers at Central Elementary. The
program was originally intended to take place over a three year period; however,
teachers and administrators at the school were so impressed with the success of the
