Listed below are the steps <br /> needed to create the three (3) new Fire Service Districts: <br /> • On December 3, 2012, the Chapel Hill Town Council directed Town staff to proceed <br /> with the steps necessary to create a new Greater Chapel Hill Fire Service District and <br /> bring this back to the Council for approval in January 2013. <br /> • On December 4, 2012, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen approved modifying the <br /> current fire service district. The intent of this action was to create a new South <br /> Orange Fire Service District which would replace the existing South Orange Fire <br /> Protection District. The correct terminology will be incorporated into a new fire <br /> protection service agreement. <br /> • Approval by the Orange County Board of Commissioners, scheduled for discussion at <br /> tonight's meeting followed by a public hearing at the January 24, 2012 regular <br /> meeting. <br /> • Approval by the North Chatham Fire Department Board of Directors. <br /> • Approval by the State Fire Marshal's Office. <br /> • Approval by the Orange County Board of Commissioners following the procedure <br /> outlined in Attachment 14, including scheduling a Public Hearing proposed for <br /> January 24, 2012. <br /> • Approval of new Fire Protection and Emergency Services Agreements before July 1, <br /> 2013. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact to the County, but there is a financial impact <br /> on all property owners in the three (3) new Fire Service Districts with higher Fire District Tax <br /> rates for the property owners. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the <br /> establishment of the three (3) new Fire Service Districts and instruct staff to proceed with the <br /> additional steps needed to establish the three (3) new Fire Service Districts before July 1, 2013. <br />
