opposite. He said that the NRC has fumbled the ball over and over with this. He encouraged all <br />to continue to be involved. <br />Commissioner Jacobs asked Jim Warren to address the issue of other like-minded <br />communities and Jim Warren said that there are many nuclear plants that are not in compliance <br />with this fire prevention issue. There are people in congress concerned about this issue and the <br />public pressure around the country is building. He said that this is a business decision that <br />Progress Energy has chosen not to fix these problems for years. <br />Jim Warren pointed out that Shearon Harris has applied fora 20-year license extension <br />for the plant. Under the current rules, Progress Energy believes and the NRC seems to indicate <br />that they would allow the plant to get this extension without complying with the federal fire safety <br />regulations. <br />Mark Chilton asked Jim Warren what he recommends for the local governments to do <br />and Jim Warren said that being in contact with Chatham County, Senator Kinnaird, <br />Congressman Price, Representative Miller, and others would be very helpful. He said that the <br />NRC is accountable to Congress. <br />Dan Coleman said that the NRC does not care what local governments think, but since <br />they are accountable to Congress, he suggested sending a delegation of elected officials <br />(including Chatham County and Pittsboro} to meet with Congressman Price about fire issues, <br />emergency plans, and corruption. <br />Commissioner Jacobs said that the Clerk is in the process of setting up a meeting with <br />Chatham County officials and Orange County Commissioners. The Mayors of Carrboro and <br />Chapel Hill and the Chair of the Board of OWASA will also be invited. The first few issues to <br />discuss will be transportation, open space, and recreation. The goal is to establish a mare <br />regularized relationship. He said that this could be a good venue to work with the Chatham <br />County officials. <br />Commissioner Jacobs said that he supports Mark Kleinschmidt's suggestion about <br />excluding Progress Energy from the business community. <br />The boards appointed the following representatives for the delegation: <br />Orange County -Commissioner Gordan <br />Chapel Hill -Mark Kleinschmidt <br />Hillsborough -Michael Gering <br />Carrboro -Dan Coleman <br />Jim Warren said that on April 1$t" the NRC will be in Apex to have an informational <br />meeting about the re-licensing process. NC Warn will be engaging in this process. <br />Future School Site CollaborationlPlacementslLand-Banking <br />Commissioner Jacobs said that this is an informational item and there is a draft letter <br />from Chair Carey. Chair Carey is asking for written comments. This has been brought up at <br />previous AOG meetings.
