Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools
<br /> Over the last seven years, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District has constructed five
<br /> new schools. These schools have increased seating capacity at all levels by 69.8
<br /> percent or 4,184 seats, going from a capacity of 5,993 in 1993 (McDougle Middle
<br /> School opened in fall 1994) to 10,177 with the opening of Smith Middle School next fall.
<br /> Two new elementary schools, McDougle and Scroggs, have provided 1,205 additional
<br /> seats for children in kindergarten through grade five. With the opening of Smith Middle
<br /> School, the number of middle school seats in the District will have increased by 1,464,
<br /> and East Chapel Hill High has provided 1,515 additional seats for students in grades
<br /> nine through twelve.
<br /> The capital investment for the recently constructed schools (currently in operation) totals
<br /> about $74.8 million or $21,675 per seat. The opening of Smith Middle School in fall
<br /> 2001 will provide another 732 seats bringing the total investment in the five newly
<br /> constructed schools in this District to $94.2 million or$22,524 per seat.
