Gold Mine Road
Mike Mills said that Mt. Carmel Church Road has a lot of traffic with somewhat narrow
pavement and no shoulders. The proposal is to improve this road with widened shoulders and
intersection improvements. This will cost about $475,000.
Commissioner Jacobs thanked Chuck Edwards for his participation in the Cornelius
Road project. He asked about Walker Farm Road and said that there were some citizens that
did not want to give the right-of-way. He asked if these were the same people that want to give
the right-of-way now and Mike Mills said yes. There is an agreement to save as many trees as
passible.
Commissioner Jacobs asked about the trust fund safety improvements for Mt. Carmel
Church Road. He asked how DOT determines which roads get top priority for safety road
improvements. Mike Mills said that he has received calls from Chapel Hill about this road and
there have been some accidents. He said that they are going to start concentrating an the
secondary paved system. Some of the considerations are accident history, runoffs, narrow
shoulders, amount of traffic, etc. He said that mare information will be coming back to the
County Commissioners about the paved road program and NCDOT welcomes comments from
the Board of County Commissioners and the public.
Commissioner Jacobs said that the Fire Chief's Council is a good place to start for
suggestions on the trouble spots in the County.
