1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: September 18, 2001
Action Agenda
Item No.
SUBJECT: Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Public Hearing
DEPARTMENT: Sheriff PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) Yes
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
A. Lindy Pendergrass, Sheriff
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To conduct a public hearing for written and oral comments on the Local Law
Enforcement Block Grant.
BACKGROUND: Over the past few years, the Orange County Sheriffs Department has
received proceeds from the U.S. Department of Justice Local Law Enforcement Block Grant.
The awards provide units of local government with funds to underwrite projects to reduce crime
and improve public safety.
Recently, Orange County received notification indicating that this year's award totals $12,271.
The Sheriffs Department will use the grant proceeds to offset departmental overtime costs.
There are two requirements that the County must fulfill prior to receiving the monies:
• The County must conduct at least one public hearing regarding the proposed uses of the
grant funds. This provides citizens the opportunity to provide written and oral comments
regarding our plans to use the funds to offset overtime costs of the departments.
• The County must designate a previously designated or newly established advisory board
to discuss the proposed uses of the grant funds. Membership on the advisory board must
include a representative from:
a. the local sheriffs office;
b. the local prosecutor's office;
c. the local court system;
d. the local public school system; and
e. a local nonprofit, educational, religious or community group active in crime
prevention or drug use prevention or treatment.
Members of the Sheriffs Department's Community Watch Advisory Board reflect the
representation outlined. The Sheriff recommends that the Community Watch Advisory
Board be the advisory board for the Local Law Enforcement Block grant also.
