Commissioner Gordon made reference to the men's shelter and said that the
County Commissioners need to ask staff to analyze the Inter-Faith Council sites, the
ones that they have already considered. She said that analysis of other sites basically
stopped when the Southern Human Services Center was proposed. There are some
sites still available. She would also like staff to see if there are any other County
properties for the shelter.
Chair Carey agreed about looking at the other IFC sites.
Commissioner Foushee said that she thinks the analysis of other sites stopped
because the analysis was completed and there were no more sites to analyze. When
this site was suggested, it became the new analysis.
Commissioner Jacobs made reference to the little white house, and said that
when the staff comes back with a plan for moving it, he wants to make sure that the
mature hardwoods in front of the house remain there.
Chair Carey asked for some clarification on the Southern Human Services
Center campus. He verified that there are two expansion sites with the existing building.
He asked about the square footage and Pam Jones said that the
one to the east was going to be approximately the same size as the existing building,
which is around 25,000 square feet, but it would be on two levels. The dental clinic was
around 5-8,000 square feet. He verified that there is the building site, two expansions,
and the site where the white house is now. The Board agreed.
A summary of what the staff is to bring back is below:
- Attachment 4 -bring it back for approval (Commissioner Gordon suggested that
the map be in color)
- White house - a plan for deconstructing or moving
- Bring back something on Evaluating the old post office
- Camparafive analysis of casts far justice facilities at post office versus Southern
Human Services Center (spring)
- Analysis of IFG sites and suggestion of additional sites
- Budgets for retrofitting facilities (as it stands now)
- Ancillary services: Kidscope and Heritage Center, (Commissioner Jacobs -give
the Board a blueprint for when decisions have to be made)
- Hillsborough's participation in meeting room
- Tie in Heritage Center with the Library -Commissioner Gordan said That this
would expand the charge of the Task Force and to wait on this, and she would
like staff to look at this first.
- Chapel Hill's participation in past office project -not to commit the space until
Orange County can do the analysis. (Commissioner Jacobs wants to know if the
Town is going to work with the County before money is spent on a professional)
Commissioner Gordon asked who owned the post office and it was answered the
Town of Chapel Hill and Pam Jones said that the Town gets the court facility fees as
well. Commissioner Gordon said that she would not recommend that the
Commissioners ask the Tawn to pay for the analysis.
Chair Carey asked about the status of the equipment for the new senior center
because it will be ready soon. Pam Janes said that the building will probably be finished
the last of April. The equipment that is part of the building itself is in the project. The
items that are not in the project are the extra things, such as the exercise equipment,
audiovisual equipment, etc. Chairs, tables, and other things related to the building are
included.
