Jahn Link said that the best thing that the County could do is to continue to support
Communities in Schools.
Terri Buckner distributed a petition representing 113 neighbors along or off of Smith
Level Road. She said that when she moved to this road five years ago, it was a nice country
road. She said that now it is a truck route, and with a new school to be opened soon just down
the road, they are worried about safety. Over the past years they have talked about putting
limits on truck routes, lower speed limits, scenic byway designation, etc. They would like for the
Board to support a task force on Smith Level Road that would bring all stakeholders together.
The petition is asking for a creation of this task force. She also asked that the County
Commissioners work with DOT to delay negotiations for driveway access onto Smith Level
Road from the new development they are proposing in Chatham County until this task force can
come together.
Chair Jacobs said that he told Ms. Buckner earlier that he would be glad to call DOT
Engineer Mike Mills and talk to him about this. Commissioner Halkiotis agreed.
Commissioner Gordon said that the urgent need is about the development on the county
line.
Chair Jacobs said to refer this to staff and for them to come back with a composition of a
task farce that includes the Board of County Commissioners.
Commissioner Carey suggested that Chair Jacobs talk with Mayor Chilton also.
b. He made reference to the letter to the
Mayors and said that it was a good letter. He said that rational people should prevail on this.
Commissioner Halkiotis gave an update an his toilet that he tried to take to the solid
waste convenience center. He said that someone asked for it within 24 hours and it was given
to an elderly lady with help from Public Works.
Commissioner Carey- no comments.
Commissioner Gordan said that the New Hape at Blackwood Farm Planning group met
and had a good initial meeting. The Transportation Board, the OUT Board, had its second
meeting.
Commissioner Gordon said that, in reference to the SAPFO and the construction of
elementary school #10, there is time for collaboration to work together to address the funding.
She was glad to see the letter from Chair Jacobs, but would have liked to have had the BOCC
send a letter of commitment to funding the school in a timely manner. If there is not that
commitment yet, she wants to pass the capital projects ordinance which will provide some
money. She is committed to funding the school sa that it will open in 20Q$.
Chair Jacobs thanked staff for the smooth budget process. In the Manager's memo,
there was a response to his question about printing collaboration and he wants to explore
Orange County vendors and to bundle printing projects if possible. He urged the County to go
to a one-year contract. Commissioner Halkiotis agreed.
