Orange County Government Week <br />April 23-29, 2006 <br />WHEREAS, America's counties provide a variety of essential services that protect our <br />communities; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties protect residents from natural disasters, terrorist attacks, crime <br />and drug abuse; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties are the first to respond to emergency situations and are <br />primarily responsible for planning for disasters; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties work to protect families, children and youth; the elderly and <br />disabled; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties provide services that make America's communities stronger, <br />safer places to live and raise families; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties protect our communities, keep families healthy, help troubled <br />youth, train laid-off workers and perform countless other jobs; and <br />WHEREAS, Counties have a long history of providing critical services; and <br />WHEREAS, County governments are the citizen's local government voice, providing <br />solutions that bring communities together. <br />Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners, does hereby <br />proclaim April 23-29, 2006 as National County Government Week in Orange County, North <br />Carolina. <br />This the 10t" day of April 2006. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Carey, seconded by Commissioner Halkiatis to <br />approve proclaiming the week of April 23-29, 2006 as Orange County Government Week, <br />endorse the "Official far a Day" activities, and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />b. Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week <br />The Board considered proclaiming the week of April 9 -15, 2006, as Public Safety <br />Telecommunicators' Week in Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br />Dinah Jeffries said that this is their "shout out" to tell how well the Telecommunicators do <br />their job, and on April 12t" there will be a dinner provided to the Telecommunicators. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis said that at the first meeting with the EMS study consultant, <br />discussion ensued that they have not recognized all of the firefighters, 911 dispatchers, and all <br />public safety employees and volunteers, and they should plan to do this soon. He would be <br />willing to serve on a group to plan this recognition sometime in the fall. <br />Commissioner Foushee read the proclamation: <br />
