The Sheriff took the initiative to do this. He <br />read the resolution. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiatis, seconded by Commissioner Foushee to <br />approve a resolution recognizing Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass and the Orange County Sheriff's <br />Department for implementing significant improvements in County law enforcement services <br />without increasing costs to County taxpayers. <br />RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE SHERIFF LINDY PENDERGRASS <br />FOR EXPENDITURE REDUCTIONS THROUGH ALTERNATIVE FUNDING <br />WHEREAS, Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass has served the citizens of Orange County since 1982 <br />and has successfully implemented significant improvements in County law <br />enforcement services without increasing costs to County taxpayers; and <br />WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Office recently purchased a Special Response Team {SRT) truck and <br />equipped it with barricade shields, tactical lights, and weapons, all through <br />donations {$40,000} from private citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, deputies and members of the department have received specialized Homeland <br />Security training at a cost of aver $45,000 funded through federal grants; and <br />WHEREAS, by housing Federal Inmates for the U.S. Marshal's Office, the department for 2005 <br />provided a revenue stream of $1,780,470 to the Orange County General fund; and <br />WHEREAS, Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass has instituted energy conservation measures by <br />reducing vehicular mileage by 10,000-15,000 miles per month without comprising <br />citizens' safety; and <br />WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Office worked with the Orange County School System and received <br />over $240,000 in grant funding from the COPS Program for cameras and video <br />equipment to enhance school security; and <br />WHEREAS, since 1994 by participating in the Federal Surplus program, the Sheriff's <br />Department has received equipment {trucks, ballistic helmets, weapons, etc.) worth <br />$1,084,633 at no cost to Orange County tax payers; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does <br />hereby acknowledge the fiscal creativity and hard work in providing security and <br />safety for the people of Orange County by Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass and the entire <br />Sheriff's Department. <br />The Sheriff accepted this on behalf of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />b.
