The Board received a report from the Building Inspections Division on a proposed <br />system of mobile field grade computers with integrated (GPS} Global Positioning System, <br />printers, and associated docking devices. <br />Susan Mellot, Supervisor of the Orange County Building Inspections Division, said that <br />she was requesting approval of equipment to implement a mobile computing program for the <br />division. She gave a PowerPoint presentation. <br />Public Service <br />Streamline the Process <br />Share the Data <br />Field Grade Mobile Computers <br />The Inspection division proposes that through the use of field grade mobile computers and <br />enhancements to our current software, a mobile inspection system would be provided to <br />increase our level of service to the citizens of Orange County.(A comparison of rugged versus <br />conventional computers is attached for review) <br />Mobile Computing <br />Far Field Inspectors Would Significantly Improve: <br />Efficiency <br />Customer Service <br />Communication <br />Public Safety <br />Efficiency <br />Reallocation of 2500 employee hours from data entry in the office to inspections in the field. <br />This equates to a savings of $75,000 through reallocation of county resources at $30.00 per <br />employee hour.•Searchable State Building codes in the field; 3,798 pages, 11 volumes available <br />on the jab-site. <br />Time studies available for improved staff allocation throughout inspection jurisdiction. •Serves <br />as backup far emergencies or disasters; all units are able to work autonomously until power is <br />restored and servers/routers are functional. <br />Utilization of bar-coding far majority of the data entry, thus eliminating user error.• Decreased <br />paper usage; savings of 20 cases (1000 reams} _ $480. z •All permit information available to <br />each inspector on jab-site. <br />
