WHEREAS, American women of every culture, class, and ethnic background served as <br />early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement; and <br />WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights <br />of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation <br />movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, <br />especially the peace movement, which create a mare fair and just society for all; and <br />WHEREAS, despite these contributions, the role of American women in history has <br />been consistently overlooked and undervalued, in the literature, teaching and study of American <br />history; and <br />WHEREAS, women and their families continue to be undervalued in society through <br />continuing pay inequity, educational inequality, discrimination and marginalization, and <br />WHEREAS, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, on March 25, 1976, <br />established the Orange County Commission for Women to promote the growth and <br />development of all Orange County women and the Commission has been doing that for more <br />than 25 years; <br />Naw, THEREFORE, do we, the Board of Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina hereby proclaim March 2006 as "Women's History Month" and commend this <br />observance to Orange County residents. <br />THIS THE 2~st day of February 2006. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />7.
