Arts Program Application Narrative
North Carolina Symphony
develop the Symphony's music education curriculum for the upcoming school year. Our current
curriculum is based on the question, "What makes music, music?" Students are led through the six
components of music: rhythm, dynamics, texture, tempo, form, and melody through interactive lesson
plans(included in the teacher's workbook), fun music games and puzzles, and introductions to great
composers and their works illustrating those concepts. For the 2011/12 school year, our selections
included Prologue and Gallop from The Comedians(D. Kabelevsky), Symphony No. 101 in D Major, "The
Clock," Mvt. II:Andante(F.J. Haydn),Overture to The Magic Flute(W.A. Mozart),The Montagues and
the Capulets from Romeo and Juliet(S. Prokofiev),Accelerations Waltz(J.Strauss,Jr.),The Entertainer
(S.Joplin), "Ode to Joy" (L. Beethoven),and Russian Sailors' Dance from The Red Poppy(R. Gliere).
Each August, teachers from across the state come to Meymandi Concert Hall in downtown Raleigh to
attend the five-hour workshop featuring presentations by the authors of the student and teacher
handbooks for that year.Teachers see and hear each activity and lesson plan from the workbooks
presented by the authors, their students, and other participating educators. To assist with covering our
cost,we keep the registration fee to a low$30 per teacher;this includes copies of the teacher
workbook, student guide,a CD of the concert program, printouts of all presentations, lunch, and special
door prizes for all attendees.Teachers can receive 0.5 CEU credits from their district for attending. NEW
THIS YEAR: In order to accommodate teachers in rural communities and those in distant counties with
no travel budget,we now provide the entire five-hour training course online. The online course is also
eligible for the 0.5 CEU credits.
The Symphony's music education concerts are a significant contribution to the arts education curriculum
in public schools. The Symphony provides teachers with detailed curriculum guides and students receive
handbooks that include biographies of the featured composers, background on their compositions, and
general information about the orchestra (see enclosed student handbook). In addition, all of the
Symphony's educational materials are available forfree on our website (www.ncsymphony.org).The
education concert program and corresponding curriculum are developed each year by a focus group of
educators from across the state, including members of the NC Department of Public Instruction,to
support the NC Standard Course of Study.
The concert is the culminating piece of the curriculum students have been working on with their
teachers during the school year. The full symphony performs each of the eight selections chosen for that
year and the conductor spends time between each song discussing the musical concept(rhythm,
dynamics, texture, tempo, form, and melody)demonstrated by each piece and introducing each section
of the orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion). This is often the first time many of the
students will hear a live classical music performance,an experience they might not have otherwise. We
break down the barriers of transportation, cost, and elitism often found in the performance art world by
bringing the music to them, free of charge, all while making classical music accessible and fun.
Committed to making music education widely accessible, the Symphony offers all of its education
concerts at no cost to students. As a result, the education concerts serve a diverse student population.
The Fall 2012 concerts will serve approximately 1,800 3rd-5th graders (ages 8-11)from Orange County
Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. The demographics of the students served are as follows:
61%Caucasian,20%African-American, 10% Hispanic,and 9%Asian.The students in attendance at the
concert will be 49%female and 51%male.Approximately 30% percent of the students served are
eligible for free or reduced lunch. * I I .
* Demographic information is based on data from the NC Department of Education.
3
