Resumes of Key Artists and Personnel <br /> Grant Llewellyn <br /> North Carolina Symphony Music Director <br /> The Maxine and Benjamin Swalin Chair <br /> Grant Llewellyn is renowned for his exceptional charisma, energy, and easy authority in music of all <br /> styles and periods. Born in South Wales, Llewellyn won a Conducting Fellowship in 1985 to the <br /> Tanglewood Music Center, where he worked with Bernstein, Ozawa, Masur, and Previn. Since <br /> beginning his tenure as North Carolina Symphony Music Director in 2004, Llewellyn has captured the <br /> interest and imagination of everyone he encounters, including Symphony musicians and patrons. Critics <br /> and audiences alike have noted the passion and concentration of the orchestra under his baton and <br /> praised his"masterful pacing and control" and"graceful and expressive direction." <br /> To date,Llewellyn has held positions with three European orchestras: Principal Conductor of the Royal <br /> Flanders Philharmonic, Principal Guest Conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and Associate <br /> Guest Conductor with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.Notable recent European guest <br /> engagements have included the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, <br /> BBC Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, and BBC Symphony Orchestra. He retains close links with <br /> the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with whom he continues to undertake television, radio, and <br /> recording projects. <br /> Llewellyn has conducted many orchestras in North America, most notably the symphonies of Atlanta, <br /> Boston, Houston, Montreal, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Saint Louis, and Toronto. Music Director of the <br /> Handel and Haydn Society from 2000-06, Llewellyn also has a reputation as a formidable interpreter of <br /> music of the Baroque and Classical periods. An equally accomplished opera conductor, Llewellyn has <br /> appeared at the opera companies of English National Opera(The Magic Flute) and the Opera Theatre of <br /> Saint Louis, where his repertoire has ranged from Handel's Radamisto to Alexander Goehr's Arianna. <br /> William Henry Curry <br /> Resident Conductor and Summerfest Artistic Director <br /> The Governor and Mrs. J. Melville Broughton Chair <br /> William Henry Curry starts his 16th season with the North Carolina Symphony in 2011-12. He came to <br /> the North Carolina Symphony by way of New Orleans where he served as Resident Conductor of the <br /> New Orleans Symphony. Maestro Curry serves as the artistic director for Summerfest and all North <br /> Carolina Symphony summer programs. Curry is also the Music Director of the Durham Symphony <br /> Orchestra, a position which he assumed in-the fall 0 '2009. <br /> A native of Pittsburgh, Curry started conducting and composing music at age 14. His first major <br /> appointment was at age 21 when he was named Assistant Conductor of the Richmond Chamber <br /> Orchestra. He also served as Resident Conductor with the Baltimore Symphony and with the St. Paul <br /> Chamber Orchestra. Maestro Curry was appointed Associate Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony <br /> in 1983, a post he held until 1988,the same year he was named winner of the Leopold Stokowski <br /> Conducting Competition and performed in Carnegie Hall. <br /> 1 <br />
