Page to Stage Lesson Plan <br /> Teaching Artist Kim Arrington <br /> Day 1: <br /> ➢ Overview of Writers Residency/Student Expectations <br /> ➢ Introducing...Shiloh Activitv <br /> Student will be asked to take out a pencil and paper. Each student will introduce themselves,and be asked <br /> to tell one sentence about the plot's chronology of Shiloh.The student will be asked to line up at the front <br /> of the room with their sentence.If a student happens to get out of order on the plot's chronology,then they <br /> will be placed in the right order. <br /> ➢ Major Plot Revisted Activity <br /> After all the students are lined up at the front of the room,the teaching artist and the students will <br /> determine 5 major plot points in the story. The other students will be asked to sit down,and only the 5 <br /> students will remain at the front.The teaching artist will write the 5 major plot points on the board,and the <br /> students will be asked to take their seats. <br /> ➢ Three Little Pigs Activity <br /> The teaching artist will assign several students to read aloud an excerpt from"The Three Little Pigs"by <br /> Roald Dahl(See Attached.)to demonstrate how a story can be turned into a poem. <br /> ➢ Shiloh Poetry <br /> The teaching artist will briefly talk about poetry writing,and give an example of a 6-line poem written <br /> about Shiloh.Then,the teaching artist will ask each student to choose one of the 5 major plot point and <br /> write a poem about the plot point. <br /> ➢ Student Share <br /> ➢ Daily Wrap-Up <br /> Day 2: <br /> ➢ Overview of Day's Activities/Student Expectation <br /> ➢ Jazz Listen Activitv <br /> Students will listen to Nat King Cole's"Straighten Up and Fly Right"first without the song lyrics. Song <br /> lyrics will be distributed.Then,students will listen again to the song,while following along with the lyrics <br /> (See Attached.) <br /> ➢ What Makes A Song Good Activity <br /> The teaching artists and students will make a list on the board of 10 things that make a song,a good song <br /> (i.e.storytelling,imagery,rhythm,memorable chorus,etc.) <br /> ➢ ABAB Rhyme Scheme Game Activity <br /> The class will be given a song lyric,and then each table grouping will compete with who can come up with <br /> a corresponding rhyme scheme the fastest.The teaching artist will show how AB rhyme scheme creates <br /> more music within a song. <br /> ➢ Shiloh Poem Revision <br /> Each student will choose their favorite two lines from their poem.Then,the students will be asked to write <br /> two more lines with corresponding ABAB rhyme scheme.Each student will have 4 song lyrics when the <br /> activity is completed. <br /> ➢ Student Share <br /> ➢ Daily Wrap-Up <br /> Day 3: <br /> ➢ Overview of Day's Activities/Student Expectation <br /> ➢ Jazz Listen II Activitv <br /> Students will listen to several different types of jazz.They will section off their papers and be asked to <br /> draw pictures or write words that come to their minds when they hear the music. <br /> ➢ Uric Group Jam Activity <br /> The teaching artist will refer to the 5 major plot points in Shiloh. The teaching artist will ask a student that <br /> represents each of the major plot points to read his/her lyrics. After each student,the teaching artist will ask <br /> other students that have similar plot point lyrics to join the other students in their designated area.The <br /> teaching artist will select one student to write for each group. Each group will have to decide what order <br /> and what lyric to put where in their song. Each group will share. <br />
