about the animals on their totem pole. (This could be used as a writing assignment in
class...)
DAY 3 (Thurs. 11/17)
(Field Trip Day to The Arts Center to view Doug Berkey's performance of"World's
Wisdom Stories")
Discussion topic:
We will discuss the ArtsCenter show and solicit comments regarding the masks, the
presentation, favorite scenes, etc.
After lunch:
Students will make their own shaker which they will decorate and embellish and can
take back to class with them.
DAY 4 (Mon. 11/21)
Discussion topic:
We will further discuss the PNW's natural resources and how they influenced the
culture.
Activity:
The totem pole characters the students created on Day 2 should now be hardened
enough for painting. The students will be shown how to do the detail painting on their
totem pole characters and will stack their characters on provided stands to complete
their totem pole.
In addition, and if time allows, we will give each student 1-2 salmon shapes to paint
(since the salmon were important characters in the "Whale in the Sky" story and a vital
natural resource for the PNW people.) These can be used for display purposes.
