The ArtsCenter
and ArtsCenter Stage on annual productions and has touring troupes that perform throughout the
community.
Galleries. The Center Gallery features the work of local and regional artists on a rotating basis.
The Gallery exhibitions highlight the work of more than 100 local and regional artists in 12
exhibitions a year. The East End Gallery provides a second gallery space, offering monthly
exhibitions featuring a mix of local and regional artists.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
During the course of the 2012-2013 school year TAC will continue its ongoing partnership with
Central Elementary(Orange County Schools)for a fifth consecutive year. This partnership is part
of TAC's focus school program, which was designed to provide enriching, meaningful arts
integration experiences to low income students over the long term. TAC's partnership with
Central Elementary has also been part of the school's School Improvement Plan since the
inception of the program in 2008. The motivation behind the focus school program was to bring
the arts into classrooms by teaching curriculum through various art forms, thus offering a program
that had a lasting impact on the culture and environment of the school. Consequently, students
would be exposed to an alternative method of instruction, which better suits all educational
environments because it caters to students across the spectrum who have different learning
styles. While we originally planned on working with Central Elementary for three years (beginning
in 2008-2009), the program was so successful and in such high demand from teachers that we
sought additional funding to continue working with them for another two years.
Through this collaboration, TAC has implemented arts integration residencies in every grade level
(K-5)at Central Elementary each year for the past four years, and last year the program was
expanded to include pre-K upon requests from the teachers. In total, TAC has implemented 25
residencies at Central Elementary and seven professional development workshops for classroom
teachers. In addition, TAC also partnered with Central Elementary in the 2011-2012 school year
for Literacy Night, which was an evening for parents that focused on using new arts-based
strategies to help their children at home with literacy concepts.
During a residency, a teaching artist goes into all classes in a particular grade level and works
with students to teach them specific curriculum concepts(often times multiple concepts spanning
different subject areas)through a desired art form (chosen by the teachers). Grades pre-K, K, 1,
2, 3 and 5 will all have Arts-Based Learning Experiences (ABLE) residencies, which are
residencies designed around a School Show students see at TAC. The experience prepares
students for seeing the show, while simultaneously integrating the chosen art form into
curriculum. For example, in the 2011-2012 school year, third grade students studied Native
American culture by constructing and decorating masks and totem poles that directly correlated to
Native American storytelling traditions, specifically those of the Pacific Northwest. The five-day
residency was specifically tied to the show"GEMS: The World's Wisdom Stories," by Doug Berky
that students saw at The ArtsCenter in November 2011.
Fourth grade students will participate in a Page to Stage residency that gives students the
opportunity to analyze a required reading through poetry and music, thus providing a more
enriching experience. Students will first identify major plot points in a story, and then convert
those plot points to poems and then song lyrics. Outside of class, the teaching artist will score the
student-written work and direct rehearsals with professional musicians and singers who will then
come back to the school about a month following the residency to perform the piece for the
students.
In addition to residencies, TAC will also have a professional development workshop for classroom
teachers focused on arts integration, which will be designed alongside the principal of Central
