For this first day, students will start
working on their masks by laying down a thin layer of paint on them as well as their
accompanying headbands. In addition, using the limited palette of the Native Americans
(black, white, red, green, yellow), students will paint sheets of color which will be used
for the cutout shapes to be applied to their masks on Day 5.
Discussion topic:
We will discuss totem poles and how they also served as a story-telling objects.
After a brief demo showing how to form their animals, each table (of 4 or 5)will be
making their own totem pole made up from individual animals which each child will
sculpt from a piece of self-hardening clay. The group can then make up their own story
