Arts in Education Grant— Spring 2012 McDougle Elementary School PTA
The 1'upueeteer
Puppeteer Hobey Ford was born in coastal Connecticut and studied music and art through-
out his youth. In 1976, Hobey became a puppeteer deciding that puppetry was a unique
way of combining his many interests and talents. In 1979,he moved to the mountains of
North Carolina to be close to his mentor, puppeteer Clyde Hollifield of The Appalachian
Puppet Theater. In 1981, he formed I Iobey Ford's Golden Rod Puppets and has toured
the US and Canada with his solo performances. Ile has appeared at the Smithsonian
Museum's Discovery Theatre,The Kennedy Center, Jim Henson's International Festival
of Puppetry as well as International festivals across the US and Canada. He has been
awarded three Henson Foundation grants for as many productions. His production of
Turtle Island Tales won puppetry's highest honor, a Citation of Excellence from Union
International De La.Marionette. He currently lives in Weavery.1le., North Carolina with
his wife and three daughters.
The Audience
A live performance is not complete unless there is an audience, and the better the audi-
ence, the better the performance. Audience skills are very important. As you enter a
theatre, even if that theatre is a gym, it is usually acceptable to talk in a low volume.
When it is time for the performance to begin,it is time to become quiet.Speaking during
a performance is considered rude and can.distract the performer. Sometimes a response
is called for,and then,a reply is encouraged. It is okay to laugh,of course, when the show
is funny,or to applaud.at the end of a piece. The best advise is to sit quietly and enjoy the
show. The performer will then put on the best performance he or she is able to achieve.
Bibliograph
Baird, Bil.
