With funds from the LiveSTRONG Foundation,painting workshops were offered to the Oncology Patients,by Jane Filer and <br /> iPad art to the Pediatric Oncology patients,by Bridget Pemberton-Smith. Collage and poetry writing were offered by Joy Javits <br /> to the adult Oncology patients in the hospital chemotherapy and patient rooms. The Grant received from LiveSTRONG <br /> encourages this Coordinator to work with the patients directly and to make that artistic work interactive. The DooR to DooR <br /> go at playing the guitar. It also allowed a Burn patient/musician to play with Gabriel for several other patients. More art is <br /> being made interactively. The guitar,keyboard are made available to patients to borrow on a regular basis. A first year <br /> medical student offers piano lessons to patients. The new harmonica program is very interactive. <br /> Proposed Uses of Grant Fund <br /> From the Orange County Arts Commission <br /> DooR to DooR is in its 21St year! <br /> The fifteen artists will perform at UNC Hospitals during the 2012-2013 year. Diali Cissokho and Pline Mounzeo will give <br /> drumming sessions to the psychiatric patients. The 10 Djembe drums we use were purchased by the UNC Volunteer <br /> Association,a huge support to the arts in the hospital,some years ago for use by the Physical Therapist who started this drum <br /> circle,Frake Hansel,Physical Therapist. Occupational Therapist,Julie Pace,often accompanies the drummers and gives her OT <br /> time for the drumming. Louise Omoto Kessel will offer collage,puppet making and origami making to Pediatric Patients. <br /> Ericka Lee Wilkins will sing Classical Songs to women on the 3rd(women on bed rest)and 6th(Women with Cancer and other <br /> ailments. Harvey Dalton Arnold,who was with the Nationally acclaimed"Outlaws"band,will play his Guitar and Rock Ballads, <br /> Harvey has been a patient. Kim Arrington,a Poet will work with Psychiatric child and adult patients;she hopes to put together <br /> of book of their writings. Charlotte Runde will draw,in 5 minutes flat,a Caricature portrait that she gives to the patient. They <br /> smile when they see how she put back as it was,a cancer patient's hair,or removes the tubes. Becky Lofland with Androgeena <br /> Puppet,who is 7 for the 21St time,sports a watch on her ankle,"so the cats can see when it's snack time."Richard Tazwell, <br /> sings and plays the keyboard. He brings strange and interesting instruments like the Jamaican thumb piano,portable roll-up <br /> piano and backpack guitar,cymbals and cowbell for patients to play,which often make them laugh. Steven Fishman,sings <br /> songs from the 30's&40's,Jenifer Crowell,a silent clown/artist draws beautiful paintings on patient faces or arms,James <br /> Beckwith sits on a pillow on the floor and plays the Sitar and an Hispanic singer,Teresa Fernandez,acoustic Bass player,Ben <br /> Palmer and a Writer,Megan Cutter,she works with her husband who is disabled,and very funny. <br /> Several of the artists will be performing for the Psychiatric patients. They are Children and Adolescents,Eating Disorders, <br /> Crisis,Psychosis and Geriatric patients,all locked in. Others of the artists will travel to the various areas of where patients are <br /> in separate rooms. Nurses will recommend,and I will ask permission of each patient. <br /> The patients tend to be from North Carolina but some are from neighboring states. Race,ethnicity and gender are divided for <br /> the most part between males and females,Caucasian and African American patients. More occasionally there is a patient or <br /> staff member who is Asian,Native American or Indian. <br />
