School Profile <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary School is located about three miles southwest of historic <br /> Hillsborough. The facility, built in 1975, serves area pre-kindergarten through fifth graders from <br /> the Orange County Schools District. The school was named for Mr. Grady Anderson Brown, <br /> who was a well-respected teacher, coach, and principal at the old Hillsborough High School. <br /> The mission of Grady A. Brown Elementary School is to educate all students to their highest <br /> level of academic performance, while fostering positive development of their physical, mental, <br /> and social needs, so that each individual student may make a positive contribution to our <br /> democratic society. <br /> The Grady A. Brown PTA is a group of parents and teachers working together on projects to <br /> strengthen the teaching and learning environment at Grady A. Brown Elementary School. The <br /> PTA strives to improve the learning environment, educational opportunities, and academic <br /> achievement of children at Grady A. Brown, in accordance with the goals of the school <br /> administration and teachers. Specifically, the PTA organizes events, programs, and <br /> communications that: <br /> • support the teachers and staff at Grady A. Brown in their important work, <br /> • provide access to educational and cultural arts opportunities, <br /> • foster a sense of community centered around the school, <br /> • improve the health and fitness of our students, <br /> • develop Grady A. Brown's learning and recreation facilities, and <br /> • share information about issues affecting Orange County Schools with our members. <br /> The PTA is open to all Grady A. Brown's parents and teachers, and is headed by a PTA board <br /> which meets monthly. PTA projects are undertaken by various subcommittees. So far in 2011- <br /> 12, the PTA consists of 162 members. <br /> Our school currently has 490 children. 39% of students have free or reduced lunch. School <br /> fundraisers in this environment can only go so far..While a direct drive fundraiser_is..a source-of <br /> funding for our school, it will not cover all of the expenses for the improvements and <br /> opportunities that our children deserve. Our school consists of students from the following <br /> ethnic groups: Caucasian (69%), African American (12%), Hispanic (16%), Asian (2%), and Other <br /> (1%)• <br /> School's Arts Programs <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary School students are the beneficiaries of a weekly art, music and <br /> Spanish language and culture curriculum. All grade levels attend one Music class per week <br /> taught by Julie Rohrman and one Art class per week, taught by Trena Jones, Ms. Ayesha <br /> Swinton teaches Spanish language and culture. Ms. Rohrman leads a fourth grade recital each <br /> year, and other musical performances. Ms. Jones has lead the 3rd grade's participation in the <br /> Hillsborough Handmade Parade each year in October through a lesson in creating handmade <br />
