School Profile
Grady A. Brown Elementary School is located about three miles southwest of historic
Hillsborough. The facility, built in 1975, serves area pre-kindergarten through fifth graders from
the Orange County Schools District. The school was named for Mr. Grady Anderson Brown,
who was a well-respected teacher, coach, and principal at the old Hillsborough High School.
The mission of Grady A. Brown Elementary School is to educate all students to their highest
level of academic performance, while fostering positive development of their physical, mental,
and social needs, so that each individual student may make a positive contribution to our
democratic society.
The Grady A. Brown PTA is a group of parents and teachers working together on projects to
strengthen the teaching and learning environment at Grady A. Brown Elementary School. The
PTA strives to improve the learning environment, educational opportunities, and academic
achievement of children at Grady A. Brown, in accordance with the goals of the school
administration and teachers. Specifically, the PTA organizes events, programs, and
communications that:
• support the teachers and staff at Grady A. Brown in their important work,
• provide access to educational and cultural arts opportunities,
• foster a sense of community centered around the school,
• improve the health and fitness of our students,
• develop Grady A. Brown's learning and recreation facilities, and
• share information about issues affecting Orange County Schools with our members.
The PTA is open to all Grady A. Brown's parents and teachers, and is headed by a PTA board
which meets monthly. PTA projects are undertaken by various subcommittees. So far in 2011-
12, the PTA consists of 162 members.
Our school currently has 490 children. 39% of students have free or reduced lunch. School
fundraisers in this environment can only go so far..While a direct drive fundraiser_is..a source-of
funding for our school, it will not cover all of the expenses for the improvements and
opportunities that our children deserve. Our school consists of students from the following
ethnic groups: Caucasian (69%), African American (12%), Hispanic (16%), Asian (2%), and Other
(1%)•
School's Arts Programs
Grady A. Brown Elementary School students are the beneficiaries of a weekly art, music and
Spanish language and culture curriculum. All grade levels attend one Music class per week
taught by Julie Rohrman and one Art class per week, taught by Trena Jones, Ms. Ayesha
Swinton teaches Spanish language and culture. Ms. Rohrman leads a fourth grade recital each
year, and other musical performances.
