Kidzu Children's Museum 2012-2013 OCAC Application Narrative:Building Community Through Mosaic III
Support Network of North Central Carolina;Hargraves Community Center, the Town of Chapel Hill;the Hospital
School,University of North Carolina Children's Hospital;Orange County Head Start and Early Head Start of the Chapel
Hill Training Outreach Project;and the Town of Chapel Hill's Earth Action Day.
Workshop Dates&Locations
Dates are to be determined but most would likely occur in Spring,2013. Most programs will be conducted off-site at
community organizations that cater to underserved children, and,as in 2011-12,may also include participation in one or
more community festivals, such as the Town of Chapel Hill's Earth Action Day and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA,
Orange County Health Department, and Orange County Partnership for Young Children's Healthy Kids Day.The Earth
Action Day and Healthy Kids Day festivals respectively allow Kidzu to partner with over 60 commercial and non-profit
organizations and over 20 organizations in Orange County. We anticipate hosting programs at the following locations in
2012-2013(all organizations took part in 2011-2012).
• Hospital School,University of North Carolina Children's Hospital. The Hospital School is part of the Chapel Hill-
Carrboro City Schools district and is located within the UNC Hospitals complex. This school has a staff of 16
serving over 2,000 patients/year.Our program can be taught in a group setting or done at bedside, when appropriate.
• Orange County Head Start/Early Head Start. The Orange County Head Start and Early Head Start serves the more
rural, northern areas of Orange County. Kidzu has a long history of partnering with Head Start via our free field trip
program and,for the past two years, the`Building Community through Mosaic"programs.
• Hargraves Community Center,Town of Chapel Hill.Hargraves Community Center, located in the Northside
community of Chapel Hill, offers aftersebool, holiday and summer day camps for children ages 5-12.Their complex
includes a gymnasium and other meeting rooms that can accommodate our workshop.Hargraves is a particular
resource for the Northside neighborhood, due to its location in a portion of Chapel Hill that is very culturally diverse
and which has a significantly lower median family income than average for Chapel Hill.
• Kidzu Children's Museum.Kidzu will also host workshops as part of our Free Sundays program(sponsored by
Durham Regional Hospital)and anticipates partnering with the Family Support Network of North Central Carolina,
Chapel Hill Public Library, and El Centro Hispano and/or similar community organizations.El Centro Hispano
would also be interested in offering the workshop at their Carrboro location.
See enclosed letters of support from partners offering to host a workshop at their site.
2011-2012 Outcomes
As we will share in our 2011-2012 final report,we are very pleased that our 2011-2012 program met and exceeded all
anticipated outcomes.A total of 10 workshops(rather than the 5-7 proposed)were held in partnership with 10 local
organizations, serving 281 children(87%more than expected). Both quantitative survey data and the enthusiastic
feedback of Spring 2011 and Spring 2012 participants attest to the value of this program and to the role it played in
sparking a love of the visual arts among participating children.Surveys were distributed to representatives of each
partner organization(teachers, program directors, etc.)and to the caregivers of all children participating in the on-site
museum workshops and the community festival workshops. A sample survey comment includes: "!t was a great and
appropriate experience since students had the opportunity to meet a real artist. They really loved engaging in the art
project. They were proud in knowing that their artwork would be displayed in a museum.for others to see."
Detailed quantitative data will be shared in our 2011-2012 final report, and were also very positive.
201.2-2013 Program Enhancements:Expand Services to Spanish-Speaking Children and Families
Kidzu has hosted workshops at the museum as part of our Free Sundays program, which has allowed us to partner with
local organizations that lacked access to a facility in which to host the workshop. One of our Free Sundays workshops
was offered in conjunction with El Centro Hispano,a community-based organization dedicated to strengthening the
Latino community.Due to demand,we were required to conduct three separate workshop sessions in the course of the
afternoon to accommodate all children interested in participating.Should our grant be approved,El Centro Hispano
would be interested in offering the workshop at their Carrboro location, where they plan to open a new community
workshop space in August 2012. Partnering with El Centro Hispano by offering a workshop at their center would
enhance Kidzu's ability to reach our Spanish-speaking community. It would also potentially allow us to receive support
from native Spanish-speaking staff and volunteers from El Centro Hispano.
Closing
We are grateful to the Orange County Arts Commission for your generous support for the past two years. We hope to be
able to build on our prior success and enhance this program in the coming year. If funded,Kidzu's Building Community
Through Mosaic Program will serve as a bridge between Kidzu's current site and our new museum, expanding access to
high-quality arts education for children in need, offering important lessons about mosaic-making,allowing children to
work with a professional artist, engaging them in the creation of artwork for our new museum, and inviting children to
help shape their community children's museum.
3
