TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL
Public Arts
I
405 Martin Luther King Jr.Blvd.
Chapel H,11,NC 27514-5705
phone(919)968-2743 fax(919)969-2063
vvavvr townof chapeffinorg
May 7, 2012
Orange County Arts Commission
501 West Franklin St.
Chapel Hill,NC 27516
Dear Commissioners:
I am submitting a letter of support for the Kidzu Children's Museum's spring 2012 Project
Grant. Last year's workshops with near Northside neighborhood attendees at the Hargraves
Community Center were certainly successful from providing creative summer activities for
youth to the resulting mosaic that will be incorporated into the new Kidzu Museum building
when it is constructed. This year, a similar program aims to reach more kids and all different age
groups. Hargraves Community Center, as a facility of the Chapel Hill Parks&Recreation
Department,is delighted to again partner with Kidzu. As part of the partnership, the Hargraves
Center will allow Kidzu and the selected artist to use its space, publicize the opportunity via its
list serv,.and provide arrangements for youth, without transportation,to attend. The project
offers these sometimes at-risk youth opportunities that might not otherwise have.
Jeannette Brossart, the artist that conducted the workshops last summer is again being employed
to facilitate the workkshops. I have the utmost respect for Ms. Brossart as an instructor and an
artist. I have worked with her on a very successful project at Ephesus Elementary School and
found her to engage the students, act professionally, and give far more to the project than she is
being paid to give.
Likewise,Kidzu continues its reputation of producing high quality educational programs for our
community. No doubt this project will again achieve the goals set forth in their proposal.
Please contact me if I can provide any additional information about the Town's partnership with
Kidzu on this project.
Sincerely,
ffrey J.Y
ublic&Cul Administrator
3
