2012-13 Arts in Education Application — Page Three
Integrating Cultural Arts into the Curriculum
As North Carolina moves to the Common Core next year, the standards for Language Arts emphasize
experiential learning of the range of literary genres, including poetry, and linking this to real world
applications. The poetry residency allows the student to put this in practice through the creation of art,
the spoken word and interacting with their peers in critique and analysis.
In coordination with the teachers, Mr. Shabazz gives students a word bank and a central image. Over the
course of the 1-week workshop, they are tasked with working those words around the central image and
creating spoken art that sees and experiences the world in new ways. At the end of the workshop,
students will have an anthology of original poems that they then share at the school's annual Poet's
Cafe or open mic that takes place at a local bookstore in November and is open to the public.
