Estes Hills Elementary
` Orange County Schools
The residency will take place over the course of five days, and the teaching artist
will visit each second grade class (four total) for one hour each day, for a total of
20 contact hours. The first two days will be spent teaching students about
musical instruments and artifacts from Africa, as well as African-American and
African games, such as soul train, Akara, and Duck Duck Goose. The third day
students will learn hands-on drumming techniques, followed on the fourth and
fifth days by a study of interactive folktales and African dance and music. The
residency ties into our science unit on sound and music, as well as social studies
curriculum on similarities and differences between different cultures and our
study of African-American heritage. This will also supplement our art curriculum
since we do not have a dance teacher and rarely have dance as part of our
special area classes.
The ArtsCenter has successfully implemented over 35 residencies in area
schools, two of which have been in second grade at Estes Hills Elementary. In
preparation for the residency, Teaching Artist Braima Mowai and The
ArtsCenter's Arts In Education Coordinator will meet with the four second grade
teachers at Estes Hills Elementary in January 2013. During this meeting we will
discuss the overall content of the residency (art form and curriculum content),
outline teacher involvement and extensions to use in the classroom to
supplement the residency, and discuss any other logistics in preparation for the
experience. The residency will then be carried out in March 2013. Following the
conclusion of the residency, the same group of people will meet again for an
evaluation meeting to discuss the overall effectiveness of the residency.
There are 88 students (7-8 years old) in second grade at Estes Hills Elementary.
There are 30 females and 58 males in the second grade, and the racial makeup
is as follows: White: 46, African-American: 13, Multi-racial: 8, Asian: 12, Hispanic:
9. There are 19 ESL students in second grade, and 14 EC students.
Second grade students at Estes Hills Elementary participated in a dance/creative
movement residency in October 2008, and then again in March 2009 as a follow
up to the first residency because it was so successful. Both residencies were part
of The ArtsCenter's Arts-Based Learning Experiences residency program, which
is a residency designed around a live show students see at The ArtsCenter or
on-site at their school. The residency prepares students for the show (art form
and content), while simultaneously integrating the arts into the curriculum
concepts being studied.
Funding in the amount of $1000 from the Orange County Arts Commission will
help us subsidize teaching artist fees for the five-day residency.
