Steph Stewart and the Boyfriends- Open Eye Caf6; 7:00- Fronted by budding songwriter Steph
Stewart and long-time musician Tim Stambaugh (dobro, banjo, bouzouki), Steph Stewart &the
Boyfriends is a duo, sometimes trio, formed by a chance jam session at a local farm's annual
harvest festival. Drawn together by a collective musical intuition, the two began collaborating on
Steph's original tunes, with Tim's traditional back-porch style accompaniment weaving expertly
through Steph's haunting melodies.
Raw Dog-Auto Logic/Peck& Artisans/Carrboro Music; 4:15 -Raw Dog has been bizarre right
from the get-go. Combining crudely funny acoustic guitar/vocal songs with the laid-back beauty
of trip-hop and the weirdness of psychedelia, this band has become a sonic mutt puppy. Most of
the time, their recordings are purely improvisational. Big D, their guitarist/engineer would hit
'record' and they would just play whatever came to mind.
Straight 8s-Tyler's parking Lot; 2:00-The Straight 8s have worked hard for over a decade to
write, record, and perform music that resonates with listeners drawn to the raw energy embodied
in traditional rock-a-billy music. While the band has earned a solid reputation for their live
shows, it is the creative process that drives founding member Robert Striegler. With two full-
length records of original material, the Straight 8s are clearly not content with being a glorified
cover-band or nostalgia act. No doubt the band will continue to evolve going forward. Faced
with the choice of"adapt or die",The Straight 8s choose "adapt and work harder".
Hindugrass-Weaver St. Market; 1:15-Hindugrass was formed in 1998 as an acoustic vehicle
for the exploration of commonalties between classical and folk music of Northern India, and the
folk and bluegrass styles of the Southeastern U.S. In this endeavor, Hindugrass has attempted to
develop its own artistic voice which shares the highly emotive and rhythmically complex
qualities common to these geographically distant styles. Using as a point of departure melodic
and rhythmic structures from the ragas of Hindustan and songs from the Appalachian tradition,
the group is finding a middle ground which reflects their diverse influences and experience.
SAD Magazine-WCOM; 3:15- SAD Magazine are Andrew Snee and Robert Graham, both
guitarists and songwriters. Andrew currently plays in the Durham-based band Sea Cow. Robert
has played in a number of Triangle bands since the mid-80's; most recently, the grunge-pop
outfit Three Piece Suit. Their music recalls a three-way collision of Elvis Costello,Neil Young,
and Richard Thompson: equal parts plaintive lyricism and guitar dynamics.
Radar's Clowns of Sedation; Fifth Season; 4:00- Free-floating ensemble of local talent
crystallizing the original songs of ex-pat Brit P.T.Pawsey and featuring the songwriting talents of
Penne Sandbeck and Jesse Jordan. Favorite stomping grounds include The Cave in Chapel Hill,
The Blue Bayou Club in Hillsborough, Dain's Place in Durham,The Station in Carrboro, Slim's
in Raleigh, Clay Street Tavern in Mebane, Jack Sprat's in Chapel Hill, and many others.
Lost Nomads-WCOM; 5:15-The Lost Nomads are a Middle Eastern music ensemble playing
traditional and modern music from Turkey, Armenia, Macedonia, and beyond. They have played
at a number of venues around central North Carolina including museums, haflas, and festivals.
