Music Festival Biographies
Some of the musicians who played their first Carrboro Music Festival in 2011:
William D.Burton- Armadillo Grill; 3:00-Burton's friendly manner eases the mood into jazz
and blues while his warm ebullience adds just the personality that his often humorous folk and
jazz songs require. WDB holds the distinction of having performed at a private party for Cat
Stevens at the London Bar& Grill. When the Late Muddy Waters saw WDB receive a standing
ovation and an encore while opening for him at Ohio State University, he commented "William
D. Burton had them jumping!"
Neuse River Flute Circle- Balanced Movement Studio; 5:00- The Neuse River Flute Circle was
founded in 2005 to promote the continuation of the indigenous flutes of North America and
support those who want to expand their abilities to play these instruments and learn about the
body of music associated with them. They encourage the makers and the making of American
Indian style flutes and provide a venue for sharing music and music resources with those
interested in indigenous flutes. They cultivate interest in the "Native American Flute" and in
American Indian flute music through educational outreach programs, performances, and
scholarly research.
Scarlet Virginia- Cat's Cradle; 3:30- Scarlet Virginia has secrets. Front porch backwoods
summer evening muse secrets. The kind that lingers on in the air long after the fireflies have
gone and the distant highway noise settles down for the night. The kind that make you feel happy
and sad and contrite and whimsically optimistic all at the same time because somewhere deep
into that thick Southern American night seep the ghosts ...of what might have been and what may
never be.
N.0 Saxophone Ensemble- Century Center; 2:00-The NCSE is an all volunteer, non-profit
ensemble whose membership includes both professional and advanced amateur players. The
repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral and woodwind works, traditional songs, jazz, rags,
marches and pieces written specifically for the large saxophone ensemble.
Justin Johnson-Fleet Feet Corporate Office Building; 3:00- Justin Johnson is an award-winning
blues guitarist, who has enjoyed a decade of professional experience, both as.a performing and
studio musician, and has offered over 2500 professional performances to date as lead guitarist or
solo guitar instrumentalist. He has also released 9 albums thus far: 5 as principal collaborator,
and 4 as solo artist. With a style firmly rooted in Blues tradition, but not afraid to break new
ground, Justin's unique sound is the direct result of his passion for combining and advancing
widely varying musical forms.
The Vagabond Union-Looking Glass Cafe; 1:00- The Vagabond Union is an alt rock band
based in the Carolinas consisting of Dave Hedeman, John Kenney, Dave Cannon and G. Malin
Wagnon. Hedeman and Kenney met in college, and have since shared a mutual respect while
pursuing other musical endeavors. Hedeman was the frontman for the southern rock band
PuddleDuck, and Kenney and Cannon were the lead guitar player and drummer for the rock band
Rotoglow.
