Future BOCC Capital Discussions
^ June 9 Schools Budget/CIP Work Session
^ June 20 Budget Work Session
Commissioner Halkiotis said that he was offended by some comments at the budget
public hearings about how the Board of County Commissioners was funding a super high-tech
new high school in Chapel Hill and there was a school in northern Orange County that had no
doors on its bathroom stalls. He said that everybody would like to have a sense of equity when
a new school comes is being built, but the bottom line is that when A. L. Stanback was built
about 12 years ago, it had many things that C. VIl. Stanford did not have, including an
auditorium. He said that you couldn't take both middle schools and bring them up to the same
level as the new middle school that is going to be built.
Commissioner Jacobs said that the 2001 bonds had $900,000 for renovations of
Orange County schools. He would like to knave how this was spent. He would also like to go
back ten years and get information about the cost for a Chapel Hill middle school.
Commissioner Gordan agreed with Commissioner Halkiotis, but she said that it is
incumbent upon the County Commissioners to do some things for older schools. She agrees
that you cannot make them the same, but you can do something to make them equivalent in
some way.
Chair Carey said that they have encouraged both school systems to try and make
those changes to the old school buildings. He said that the Board has opted not to adopt a
policy of making the school buildings equivalent because the cast of renovations is so high. He
thinks that Option 2 provides the school systems with a little more money to have the flexibility
to da same of these things.
Chair Carey asked about the Board of Elections space needs. Commissioner Jacobs
said that there is another meeting of the Space Needs Committee next week, and this is one of
the items to be discussed.
11. Closed Session-NONE
12.
