E. School Resource Officers
Rad Visser said that during the last 15-18 months, representatives from the County
Commissioners and the school boards have been meeting on a regular basis to talk about
collaboration and efficiencies. One of the topics that has come up is the issue of School
Resource Officers (SROs) and how they are provided and funded. Last fall, representatives
from each of the law enforcement agencies, the Managers, and the school staffs attended a
meeting about haw 5R0's are deployed. Everyone believes that having SRO's in schools is
critical. The way in which the SRO's are deployed is working very well right now. They did not
come up with a better way to fund SRO's, but everyone agreed that it was important for the
function to continue. The County Commissioners did include as one of the legislative priorities a
proposal to the State of North Carolina to designate funds to every middle and high school in
the state to provide a slot for a School Resource Officer.
Jim Ward agreed that SRO's are a critical resource for the schools.
