WHEREAS, it is the goal of Orange County to improve the quality of life of all children who live <br />here; and, <br />WHEREAS, preventing child abuse and breaking the cycle of abuse is the responsibility of <br />every resident; <br />NOW, THEREFORE do we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina, hereby proclaim April 2005 as "Child Abuse Prevention Month" in Orange County and <br />call upon all residents and organizations to join together to prevent child abuse. <br />THIS THE 15th DAY OF MARCH 2005. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Halkiotis to <br />declare April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Orange County, and authorize the Chair to <br />sign. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />Denise Schaffer from DSS said that there is a group of staff from various organizations <br />that are working together to plan some activities. One of the activities is the Blue Ribbon <br />Campaign. <br />b. Fair Housing Month <br />The Board considered a proclamation to recognize and celebrate April as Fair Housing <br />Month and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />Human Rights and Relations Director Milan Pham said that the Department of Human <br />Rights and Relations in collaboration with the Department of Housing and Community <br />Development is organizing an Orange County Fair and Affordable Housing Fair to highlight the <br />services offered in Orange County. The fair is scheduled to take place at University Mall from <br />10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23~d. In conjunction with the fair, HRR is going to begin <br />a campaign to educate landlords and management companies on their operations under the <br />Fair Housing Act. <br />Commissioner Foushee read the proclamation. <br />A PROCLAMATION <br />FAIR HOUSING MONTH <br />WHEREAS, April, 2005 marks the thirty-seventh anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of <br />1964 and the 22"d anniversary of the North Carolina Fair Housing Act prohibiting <br />discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national <br />origin, handicap and familial status; and <br />
