A PROCLAMATION <br />Severe Weather Awareness Week <br />March 13t" through 19t", 2005 <br />WHEREAS, The National Weather Service and the Governor of North Carolina have <br />proclaimed the week of March 13t" through 19t" as Severe Weather Awareness <br />Week; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County is vulnerable to severe weather, including the devastating <br />impacts of tornadoes; and <br />WHEREAS, Tornadoes and severe weather occur each year in North Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County was most recently struck by a tornado on January 14, 2005; and <br />WHEREAS, The need for residents to learn more about severe weather and how to protect <br />themselves should be emphasized; <br />NOW THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim the <br />week of March 13t" through 19t", 2005, as Severe Weather Awareness Week, <br />and encourage all residents to learn more about severe weather and be aware <br />of its dangers, especially during the spring and summer months. <br />Adopted this 15th day of March 2005. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Halkiotis to <br />designate the week of March 13t" through 19t", 2005 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in <br />Orange County, and encourage residents to learn more about severe weather safety and <br />authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />Chair Carey asked about any activities and Jack Ball said that they are participating in <br />a statewide drill, they will be doing tornado drills, and they have information in the office for the <br />public. <br />Commissioner Gordon asked about the severity of predictions and Jack Ball said that <br />they use meteorologists from the power companies, and they have a good track record and <br />keep EMS posted. <br />Commissioner Gordon asked about the recommendation for the public about a list of <br />items to keep on hand and Jack Ball said that there is a list on the EMS website. <br />e. County Government Week <br />The Board considered proclaiming the week of April 10-16, 2005 as Orange County <br />Government Week and endorsing the "Official for a Day" activities and authorizing the Chair to <br />sign. <br />Assistant County Manager Gwen Harvey read the proclamation. She was standing in <br />for Sharron Hinton, Director of Community Programs. <br />
