Chapel HilllOrange County Visitors Bureau Annual Report <br />The Board received a presentation from the Executive Director of the Chapel <br />Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau of their Annual Report. <br />Executive Director Rene Campbell presented this report, which is incorporated by <br />reference. She thanked the County for all of the assistance to the staff on and ongoing basis. <br />She said that one of the key things far them was the increase in hotel occupancy of 3%. On <br />page 4, it shows that Orange County ranks 22nd in terms of economic impact on visitor spending <br />out of 100 counties in North Carolina. The sales tax in Orange County amounted to $9.28 <br />million. This represents a savings of $75 to residents of Orange County. As they look ahead to <br />2004-05 she wants to accomplish several things. One of the things is a sense of place in <br />Orange County. They will also be looking to do a visitor profile, which will help them to make <br />good marketing decisions. The dining guide will be broken down by community as well as by <br />food type. They will also be doing a bridal guide and redesigning the website. The first <br />package they will be working an is a "food adventure" because there are a lot of restaurants in <br />Orange County that buy food locally. She wants to tie into this. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis asked about the usage of the Dean Smith Center for non- <br />universityfunctions. Rene Campbell said that the RBC Center is getting a lot of the concerts <br />now. She will do same more checking on this. <br />Rene Campbell said that she can now set up meetings and she would like to meet with <br />each of the County Commissioners to get perspective. <br />John Link asked about the statistic on page nine and the year-end totals. The number <br />of rooms generated in 2003-04 is 1,200 mare than the previous year, but the occupancy tax <br />receipts are less. Rene Campbell said that sometimes it is the rate that is being charged. <br />John Link asked if they counted the Carolina Inn and she said part of the time. When <br />people are visiting the University on University business, they do not pay the bed tax.
