State University on the NC 10% Campaign to help build North Carolina's Local
Food Economy.
BACKGROUND: The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), a collaborative
organization of N.C. State University, North Carolina A & T State University and the North
Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is committed to building North
Carolina's sustainable local food economy. Through its Farm to Fork initiative, CEFS has
energized and connected thousands of North Carolinians and hundreds of local, regional and
statewide organizations that share this commitment. The NC 10% Campaign is a product of
this work.
The goal of the 10% Campaign is straightforward: Encourage consumers to commit 10% of
their existing food dollars to support local food producers, related businesses and communities:
• Promotes NC farmers, foods, communities and businesses
Educates consumers, decision - makers and the media
• Collaborates with the many influential organizations already in the field and those just
bloom
Why 10 %?
North Carolinians spend about $35 billion a year on food. If individuals spend 10 percent
(just $1.05 /day) locally, about $3.5 billion would be available for the local economy.
